How to turn off the Government alerts on iPhone
To turn off Government Alerts on your iPhone, follow the given steps. For iPhones with iOS 15.4 and above (including iOS 16): For iPhones with iOS 15.3 or lower: Note: Do note that government alerts aren’t available in all the countries and regions. So, you may not find them on your iOS device. Moreover, irrespective of whether you have disabled Emergency Alerts or not, if you are a US resident, your device will continue to receive Presidential Alerts (from the White House) via FEMA that warn people of national emergencies.
What is an Emergency alert?
In an emergency, Government officials use WEA ( Wireless Emergency Alerts ) to provide us with reliable and timely system alerts. These are short emergency messages from authorized federal, state, local, tribal and territorial public alerting authorities. These messages are broadcasted from the cell towers in the targeted areas. Emergency alerts are broadcasted on WEA-enabled devices only. Here are the types of alerts you can receive from WEA:
AMBER alerts Presidential Alert Public Safety Alert Test Alert
AMBER alert
AMBER alert is to notify users about a missing person (in most cases, a child). It stands for America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response. This alert is usually there when a person goes missing. The broadcasting area of these alerts is highly dependent on the area of a missing person.
Presidential alert
The Presidential Alert is also known as the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS). Higher authorities in the US national government use this alert in extreme emergencies. The Presidential WEA alerts citizens about threats like terrorist attacks, quick natural disasters, etc.
Public Safety alert
Public Safety alerts are usually geo-targeted. Mostly they are from local authorities. These alerts include information about small-scale earthquakes or public announcements about severe weather conditions.
Test alerts
These alerts are to check if these alerts are working. Test alerts are conducted by governments and are user-specific. Unlike other important alerts, you can keep these alerts off all the time. Before I sign off, I suggest not to turn these alerts off unless it’s almost necessary, as these are important alerts that provide us information on our safety.
